Wednesday Night Study:  Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time by Marcus Borg
Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time: The Historical Jesus and the Heart of Contemporary Faith by Marcus J. Borg will be the topic of discussion during Wednesday Night Study gatherings this fall.  According to Library Journal, "Borg provides an account of contemporary Jesus scholarship, told in simple language for lay readers, and of his personal struggle to find authentic, mature faith."  Publishers' Weekly says, "In this small, but eloquent and learned book, Borg directs his readers away from confessed doctrines about Jesus?and toward a relationship with the Spirit of God."

Starting September 13, the Wednesday Night Study Group meets in the Social Room from 6:30 to 7:30pm.  Both regular and occasional participants are welcome.  Requests for books may be directed to Linda Russell in the church office at 315-253-3331 or lsruss@aol.com.

"Meet Mark" - Wednesday Noon Bible Study to Focus on the Shortest Gospel
The Gospel According to Mark will be the focus of a Wednesday Noon Bible Study beginning September 13.  Pastor Phil Windsor will lead discussions with occasional help from church members.

Mark is the featured Gospel in this year's (Year B) series of readings from the Revised Common Lectionary, a three-year cyclical schedule for reading the Bible.  This lectionary is used as a guide for Sunday worship by several different denominations and is generally followed by the pastors at Westminster.

Mark is the shortest of the four gospels, considered the oldest of the three synoptic gospels (Matthew, Mark and Luke) and influential in the writing of the other two, and according to biblical scholar William M. Ramsey, "for our knowledge of the life of Jesus?it is our first, basic source of information."  (The Westminster Guide to the Books of the Bible, p. 345)

Wednesday Noon Bible Study meets in the Conference Room in the Education Building from noon-1pm.  Bring a bag lunch.  All adults are welcome.

Lectionary lessons from the Gospel of Mark in September include:
Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23; Mark 7:24-37; Mark 8:27-38; Mark 9:30-37.

Book Discussion Group
The Westminster Book Discussion Group meets monthly. In recent months, the group has explored the following books: The Kiterunner, The Chosen, The Name of the Rose, Frankenstein, and Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Mermaid Chair,  Night, Of Human Bondage,  The Laramie Project, and The World is Flat.

The September book selection is Year of Wonders.
Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague by Geraldine Brooks
The bubonic plague arrives in a 17th century rural English village, brought in on flea-infected cloth from an itinerant tailor. The plague devastates the isolated village, and the story is told through the voice of Anna Frith, a young mother who survives the "year of wonders." A fascinating, emotional, and memorable page-turner, this book raises questions of God's role in tragedies, and people's role in helping each other. Join Westminster readers on Monday evening September 25, at 7pm in the Social Room to discuss Year of Wonders. Year of Wonders is available at Seymour Library.

Faith and Film Night
"Faith and Film Nights"
are opportunities to share a movie (new or old, comedy or drama, documentary or fiction) and discuss it afterwards. Recent selections have been The DaVinci Code, Good Night and Good Luck, The Laramie Project and The Gods Must Be Crazy. The September movie will be The Chorus and the October movie will be An Inconvenient Truth.

The Chorus (Les Choristes) September 21
Faith and Film Night meets Thursday, September 21 at 6pm in the Social Room to watch The Chorus, an inspiring film about the power of music. A French cross between Goodbye Mr. Chips and Mr. Holland's Opus, The Chorus is a moving story of a music teacher who transforms the lives of troubled boys in a French boarding school. Come watch The Chorus (approximately an hour and half long with discussion to follow) on our new big screen format in the Social Room. Free concession stand treats include popcorn, soda, and candy.

An Inconvenient Truth October 19
An Inconvenient Truth
, Al Gore's critically acclaimed documentary about global warming, will be shown at Westminster Thursday, October 19 at 6pm, in cooperation with a national project by Interfaith Power and Light, who is encouraging churches to show this film to educate the public about the threat of global warming.
