Adult Forum

Adults gather every Sunday at 10:45am (with some exceptions in the summer and holiday weekends) in the Social Room, following worship, for a variety of educational programs-- Bible study, current events, mission and service education, book or video discussion, etc. 

September Adult Forums:
September 10:  Abraham, Ishmael and Isaac
Pastor Phil Windsor, along with special guests Herb Sussman and Elaine Cohen from Congregation B'Nai Israel and Imam Abdur Rahim Muhammed , will explore the different understandings that the Jewish, Islamic, and Christian faith traditions have of Abraham, "father" of all three faiths, what the three traditions have in common in their backgrounds, and where they differ.

September 17:  Shi'ites and Sunnis: Sibling Rivalry in the Muslim Family
Although Christians are becoming more familiar with Islam in general, there is still much they don't understand.  Recent events in Iran and Iraq have made people in the West more aware of, through not necessarily better informed about, Shi'ite Islam.  When viewed from the outside, the differences between Sunni and Shi'ite Islam are small compared with what they have in common.  This forum will provide information about the origins of Shi'ite Muslims and some of the tensions between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims in the past and today.

September 24:  Hezbollah, Israel and Lebanon:  Why Should Christians Care?
Few countries have a more complicated pattern of religion, politics, and recent history than Lebanon. Israel occupied the southern part of the country for eighteen years before pulling out in 2000; Syrian military occupied Lebanon until 2005. Christians represent a strong 40 percent minority with political clout and representation in a slightly majority Muslim nation. The country celebrated democratic elections in 2005, but Iran and Syria still exercise considerable influence in the nation through their financial and military support of the Islamic group Hezbollah. What are American Christians to think about the war between Israel and Lebanon?
